How it Works
The facilitator packet has everything you need to run the simulation.
- Comes in its own lock bag for security and laminated for durability
- Objectives of the simulation
- Set up guide - can set up experience in minutes
- Pre-brief simulation guidelines plus Pre-brief activities to assign prior to experience
- Facilitator Key: All handouts that students use during simulation with correct answers and rationales
- Hints to give students if they need assistance during the experience
- Debrief clinical judgment questions and reflection questions
Starting the Simulation
- Students will receive a REPORT packet (one per group)
- Includes: End of shift report and treatment plan for each patient
- Priority decision needs to be made on who to see first (critical component of nursing practice, but minimal opportunities for students to do in the clinical site)
Reveal the code
- Students will determine the response to the questions and scratch off to reveal a code
- If there are multiple questions in a packet, students will need to figure out the code for the lock bag using given hints or patterns
- The gaming is interactive, collaborative and simulates the time constraints that nurses have during their shift - the need to make clinical decisions about their patients quickly
Lock Bags
- Students will need to determine which lock bag to put in the code
- If successful, they will get another packet with patient information to make more clinical judgment decisions
- If unsuccessful, they will need to figure out what part they did incorrect. Could be answering the question wrong, figuring out the code wrong, or picking the incorrect lock bag.
Debrief
- Students will navigate through the scenario until the reach the last lock box that has the debrief packet
- Students will respond to what they did during the simulation and why
- They will answer clinical judgment and reflection questions about the simulation and their experience
- During the in person debriefing session, students will read their responses for discussion with the larger group
- Faculty collects all packets to review and grade
- The WHY is important to understand what the students were thinking during the simulation
-
Prioritization
Clinical does not offer opportunities for students prioritize multiple patients and who and what to do first. Hospital Escape SIM includes multiple opportunities for students to prioritize patients and care.
-
Time
The time used to determine the code and unlocking the lock bag simulates actual time it takes during a nurses day that takes away from patient care, ie the time it takes to chart, walk down the hall, and gather medications. This simulates the stress of time management and making quick decisions.
-
Clinical Judgment
Hospital Escape SIM is packed full of clinical judgment decision points. Faculty can see how students are thinking to help with learning and building their clinical judgment skills.
