Simulation Standards

Have you taken the time to familiarize yourself with Healthcare Simulation Standards if Best Practices? The International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) is really our go to for getting the latest and greatest about simulation for nursing. These standards were used in the development of Hospital Escape SIM experiences. This product guides you through the pre-brief, simulation, and de-brief activities. But regardless of all of the work that Hospital Escape SIM has done for you, digging into the best practices is essential if you want to effectively run a simulation and teach students or evaluate nurses for competence. This might be a great time to say that I don’t have any financial benefits from sharing this information. In fact, at this moment in time, I am not a member…… but l am seriously thinking about joining. I am pretty passionate about teaching using simulation. But nonetheless, as simulation has evolved over the years, we must too. INACSL is doing that work for us. Simulation has proven over and over to be a positive learning experience, increase clinical judgment, and is superior to lecture why not incorporate it in curriculum??

If you are feeling the stress, it has been shown in literature that there are barriers, mostly resources. Lack of time to build and lack of sufficient staff to facilitate and de-brief. Simulation is a huge undertaking, but once in place, such a benefit to student learning! You don’t have to have a high-fidelity mannequin to engage students, build clinical judgment skills, or transfer knowledge to practice. It takes multiple DIFFERENT experiences to do these things.

Change up your teaching pedagogies to increase student engagement and learning.

I encourage all of you to dive into the best practices of simulation. Reflect on your resources, then go back and review what Hospital Escape SIM can offer your school of nursing or hospital staff.
